PURPOSE:To effectively prevent the occurrence of a torque shock and to improve engine performance, by a method wherein, during variation of each operation area in which stratified combustion of air-fuel mixture and uniform combustion are effected, overlap of the feed of fuels for various kinds of combustion and complete cut are prevented from occurring. CONSTITUTION:A title device is provided with a means 34, detecting the running state of an engine, a means 41, inputting an output from the means 34 to perform stratified combustion of air-fuel mixture at a given set timing when an engine is in a first running area, e.g. a low load running area, and a means 41, performing uniform combustion of air-fuel mixture at a given set timing when the engine is in a second running area, e.g. high load running area. Meanwhile, a means 42 is provided for detecting a time when a varying time of a running area between the first and second running area comes during a time between a uniform combustion timing and a bedding combustion timing. Further, a means 43 is provided for delaying inputting an output from the means 42 to delay execution of switching the feed of each fuel by means of the means 40 and 41. This constitution prevents the occurrence of overlap of the feed of fuels and complete cut.
