NEW MATERIAL:The monohalogenotrifluorooxetane of formula I or formula II (X is Cl, Br or I). EXAMPLE:3-Chloro-2,2,3-trifluorooxetane or 2-chloro-2,3,3-trifluorooxetane. USE:A useful compound giving a linear polymer free from branches by ring- opening polymerization and giving a derivative having useful functions by the reaction with other compound. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I or formula II can be produced by reacting a monohalogenotrifluoroethylene of formula III with a compound having (CH2O) unit. The reaction is preferably carried out at 40-50 deg.C in liquid phase in the presence of hydrogen fluoride. The amount of the hydrogen fluoride is preferably 5-10mol per 1mol of the (CH2O) unit.
