PURPOSE:To easily produce the titled whisker with high hardness which is covered on the surface with a vitreous material by calcining a mixture of a whisker-shaped alkali titanate and a glass forming oxide at a specified temp. CONSTITUTION:The mixed material is obtained by mixing the alkali 2-titanate formed in the whisker shape or the alkali 4-titanate formed in the whisker shape together with the glass forming oxide (e.g. SiO2) at a temp. below the calcining temp. Then the mixture is calcined at the glass melting temp. and below the melting temp. of alkali 6-titanate (700-1,350 deg.C). Thus the alkali 6-titanate whisker covered on the surface with the vitreous material is obtained.
