PURPOSE:To identify the several kinds of samples by measuring the refractive index of a liquid to be measured, by an optical fiber, etc., for transmitting a light beam generated by a light emitting element provided on one end part, and also, measuring the temperature of its liquid. CONSTITUTION:The output of the light emitting element 2 provided on one end of an optical fiber or an optical waveguide 1 is transferred to a light receiving element provided on the other end, and also, the temperature of the liquid to be measured, in the vicinity of said optical fiber, etc., 1 is detected by a temperature sensor 4. The output of the light receiving element 3 and the temperature output of the liquid to be measured are amplified 5 and 6, sent to a temperature compensating circuit 7, and the output of the sensor 4 is aligned to the inclination of the temperature change of the output, and brought to a temperature compensation. Its output is led to comparators 8, 9 and 10. In such a way, from several kinds of output characteristics, the liquid to be measured can be identified.
