Peroxide bleaching of mechanical, thermomechanical and chemimechanical pulp is controlled by addition of a known amount of bleaching chemicals in the first stage, this amount being made to react under defined conditions, whereupon the brightness of the pulp after the first stage is used to control the later stages. In the first stage fresh chemicals are used, the chemicals are recirculated from a later bleaching stage or a mixture of these is used. Hydrogen peroxide is the preferred bleaching agent, but other peroxides can also be used.
