The invention relates to the application of enkephalinase inhibitors as growth promoters, in particular in production animals. Benzyl N-(3-acetylthio-2-benzylpropionyl)aminoacetate (acetorphan), N-(3-mercapto-2-benzylpropionyl)glycine (thiorphan) and 1-(3-mercapto-2-methyl-1-oxopropyl)-L-proline (captopril), for example, are used as growth promoters. The corresponding compositions, containing at least one enkephalinase inhibitor as active principle, may be prevented in a form suitable for ingestion via the oral route; this mode of administration is legitimately applicable in zootechnics on a large scale, the growth promoter being added to the feed or to the drinking water supplied to the animals.
