[Also in Division C1] A single crystal is produced by cruciblefree zone-melting using a CO 2 -laser beam as heating means. A shaped crystal, e.g. in the form of a tube or disc, may be produced. The beam and/or material being zone-melted may be moved. The two ends of a bar of the material may be relatively rotated and/or moved axially. The beam may move outwardly on a rotating disc. Molten material may be fed to the periphery of a rotating disc from a feed bar. The material may be within an oven which heats it to a temperature of within 500‹C of its mp. It may alternatively be surrounded by a hollow reflector. Doping may be effected during the process. A number of materials are specified.</p> |
