Title cpds of formula (I) (where R1 is alkyl, phenyl, opt. substd by lower alkyl, NO2 or halogen or aralkyl, or aralkenyl opt. substd in the aryl gp by lower alkyl, NO2 or halogen, and R2 is H, lower alkyl or halogen) which are useful as intermediates (e.g. for the choleretic 2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid 4-methyl 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridide), are prepared by reducing 1-benzylpyridinium salts of formula (II): with NaBH4 in the presence of an inert solvent at ca 25-100 degrees C.
