[Also in Division H1] An array of thin film magnetic storage sites comprises a thin film of soft magnetic material 16 disposed on a substrate 12 and a thin film of hard magnetic material 20 disposed on portions of the soft film to define a pattern of exposed soft magnetic material storage sites 22, 24, 26, 28. As shown in Fig. 1, each row of a two row array is provided with coils 30, 32 or 34, 36 respectively and the preferred directions of magnetization are indicated by arrows 38, 40. The substrate may be aluminium or plastic, or glass on which is sputtered a layer of gold 14. The soft film is electro-deposited to cover substantially all the substrate and a non- conductive masking coating 18 is applied using a photoresist process and then the hard film is electroplated on to the unmasked portions of the soft film. The masking coating 18 may be left on or removed. The hard film suppresses formation of unwanted edge domains and acts as a barrier to domain walls which move in the soft film. Examples of suitable hard film compositions and thicknesses are given.</p> |
