Shock absorber, particularly for motor vehicles, of the type with a cylinder in which a piston 3 provided with openings 6 dissipates its energy by being braked in the oil contained in the said cylinder. The piston 3 is provided with, in addition to the usual openings 6, passages 7 fitted with elements 12 made of shape-memory materials which determine the shutting of the said passages 7 as a function of the heating of the damping oil.
