A flow-monitoring device for a flowing fluid, in particular lubricating oil, has an elongate housing space through which the fluid flows and which has a wall which, at least in certain sections, allows the transmission of radiation. In the said space there is a freely movable indicator which does not allow the transmission of radiation and can be lifted off from its position of rest into an operating position by the action of the fluid flow. The position of the indicator is monitored by a radiation barrier, the beam of which runs through the section of the housing space allowing the transmission of radiation and which uses an electronic circuit to drive electrical switching means in dependence on the position of the indicator.
