PURPOSE:To efficiently produce industrially useful l-menthol, by bringing a strain obtained by cultivating a specific bacterium belonging to the genus Cellulomonas or a crushed strain thereof, etc., into contact with l-menthone. CONSTITUTION:Cellulomonas turbata sp. KE31 (FERM 9059) is cultivated in a liquid culture medium containing 0.1-5% at least one of D-arabinose, L- arabinose, maltose, galactose and sodium gluconate and yeast extract or corn steep liquor at 25-36 deg.C, preferably by successively adding 0.02-0.05% l- menthone [ethanol:l-menthone = 1:1 (vol./vol.)] at the start of the cultivation and every 6-24hr thereafter for 1-4 days to afford the aimed l-menthol. Cultivated microbial cells, obtained by the above-mentioned cultivation method and having the ability to produce the l-menthol, crushed microbial cells thereof or an active fraction purified therefrom can also be brought into contact with l-menthone to provide the aimed l-menthol. |
