PURPOSE:To attain accurate reading by deciding the drop-out color of a document based on detecting signals from plural color sensors having different sensitivity peaks and switching a fluorescent lamp. CONSTITUTION:When a document 5 is carried up to a station, a light source 29 is lighted and light having light emitting spectrum in a wide band is radiated on the document 5. A color sensor 26 receives reflected light from the document 5 and two different detecting signals corresponding to the wavelength of the reflected light are outputted to a differential amplifier 27. A switching signal generating circuit 28 decides the drop-out color of the document 25 based on the output signal of the differential amplifier 27 and outputs a switching signal for the fluorescent lamps 23, 24 in accordance with the decided result.
