For the loading and unloading and/or replacement of tools in presses using a tool replacement carriage, which is composed of an upper carriage and a lower carriage, and using a drawing-off drive which is arranged in the upper carriage and can be coupled to the tool, it is proposed that a driven chain arrangement be provided in the upper carriage, which arrangement is positioned in a horizontal plane and accommodates at least one carrier which can be coupled to the tool. The chain drive and the drawing device replace a spindle drive and give rise to much less pressure and a much higher degree of efficiency than would be the case if a spindle drive was used.
