A steering mechanism for a power-assisted steering system for motor vehicles is provided with two steering circuits separated hydraulically from each other, one steering circuit being supplied with hydraulic fluid by a pump (19) driven by a motor (20) and the second steering circuit being supplied by a wheel-driven pump (22). A control slide valve (9, 10), a control sleeve (3) surrounding the control slide valve, a torsion bar (2) and a piston (5) which increases the manual steering power and has cylinder chambers (7, 8) are furthermore provided. A second torsion bar (27) is arranged in the steering mechanism housing and this torsion bar is likewise connected at one end to the control slide valve (9, 10) and at its other end to the control sleeve (3). The two torsion bars (2, 27) are connected in parallel and one of the two torsion bars is connected at one end to the control slide valve (9, 10) or the control sleeve, with a symmetrical play for both directions of rotation. <IMAGE>
