A stopping device, such as a cable and chain stopper on a vessel or the like, is fitted with a fork-shaped stopping member (14) having a lead portion, and is connected to means for lifting the stopping member to above and lowering the same to below a specific level, in the present case a deck. The fork-shaped member is provided with a movable slotted rotary disc (17) adapted to be locked in a plurality of positions, and which is arranged in a well of the stopping member, downwardly of the lead portion. By having slots of different sizes the device can be used for cables or chains of different diameters.
