The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for setting uniform treatment-agent coatings on running material webs, especially on webs of woven and knitted fabric, and is intended by simple means to obtain reliable measurement values for controlling the linear pressure of a squeezing unit, downstream of the coating device, over the width of the material web. For this purpose, it is proposed, according to the invention, before the coating of the treatment agent, to subject the dry material web to throughflow measurements in a manner distributed over the width of the material web and to use the resulting varying throughflow values in order to set the varying linear pressures for squeezing off the coated treatment agent over the width of the material web (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
