摘要 Metal surface is coated with a film forming polymer contg. at least 0.01 mole % of a monomer unit of formula (I) contributing bidentate chelating gps.. The metal is a transition metal, a group IIA, IIIA or IVA metal or an alloy. Where R' = H, 1-4C alkyl, which can be chlorinated, CN or Cl; P has up to 75 atoms, does not react with or chelate with Q and does not contain polymerising units. Q is a bidentate chelating moiety which has a solvating ability for the metal surface given by the expression log K1 + n (14-pH)-(pKs+pKa) is less than 0.0, where K1 is the first stepwise stability constant of the chelate and metal, n is the relevant valency of the metal, pH is the acidity under the conditions of rest, pKs is the solubility prod. of the metal hydroxide and pKa is the stability constant of H+ with the chelate moiety. (I) may be copolymerised with ethylenically unsaturated comonomers.
