Process for producing a wood grain-like surface profiling on an extruded plastic profile of integral foam which is compacted at least with respect to the surface to be profiled. The plastic profile is introduced at a predetermined rate into the roll nip between an embossing roll heated to embossing temperature and a counter-roll. The embossing roll has embossing ribs projecting above the surface of the cylindrical roll casing, the embossing ribs being sunk into the surface to be profiled during the embossing operation and, during the sinking operation of the embossing ribs, plastic material being displaced. In the process, an embossing roll is used which has embossing depressions which are contiguous with and adjacent to the embossing ribs, whose level is below the surface of the cylindrical roll casing and which are designed so as to receive the displaced plastic material. The embossing roll is pressed completely onto the surface to be embossed, with contact of the roll casing and with pressure deformation of the material displaced during the sinking operation of the embossing ribs. An embossing roll for carrying out the process is also specified. <IMAGE>
