PURPOSE:To enable cooling of a printing head to be accelerated without contaminating paper, by providing a gap-controlling means for setting a gap at the time of accelerating the cooling of the printing head to be wider than the gap at the time of printing. CONSTITUTION:When an abnormal high temperature condition of a printing head 15 is detected by a head temperature detecting circuit 25, a controlling circuit 22 stops printing by stopping the supply of a printing signal to a printing head driving circuit 24, and then outputs a carriage idle-reciprocation signal to a carriage motor driving circuit 26 to reciprocate the head 15, thereby accelerating the cooling of the head 15. Before the reciprocation of the head 15, the controlling circuit 15 outputs a gap-enlarging signal to a driving circuit 27 for a gap-adjusting motor, thereby widening the gap. Thus, the gap at the time of cooling the head 15 is made wider than that at the time of printing, and the head 15 is reciprocated over the same line on a paper 12, with a sufficient gap therebetween, whereby the head 15 is supplied with an air flow. |
