PURPOSE:To obtain a color picture with high brightness and excellent color balance by using a converged light for a light from a light source and selecting the optical length of a red light shortest among the optical length from the three split of red/blue/green lights till the synthesis. CONSTITUTION:The light from the light source 1 is split into three as red/green/ blue lights, the lights split into three are synthesized via separate liquid crystal panels 5R, 5G, 5B and the synthesized light is projected. In a projection type color picture display device performing the above processing, the light from the light source 1 is selected to be converged light and the optical path length for the red light is selected shortest among the optical path lengths from the three split into red/green/blue lights till the synthesis. The light from the light source 1 is selected to be the converged light and the longer optical path length causes much converged light to increase the luminous quantity. Moreover, the optical path length is selected shortest, then the red light uses the light not converged in comparison with the green and blue lights, the luminous quantity of the red light is decreased and the luminous quantity of the green and blue lights is increased relatively, the color temperature of the synthesized light is increased and the color picture with well color balance is displayed.
