An apparatus for tensioning strings, especially for tennis, badminton and squash stringing machines, has a conical disc and a clamping disc. When the tennis string is laid, it slides down the cone and becomes fixed between the cone and the clamping disc. The clamping disc consists, for example, of rubber, as a result of which a high frictional force is achieved. As a result it is possible, up to a predetermined tensile force, to tension the strings without sliding in a single manual action.
