The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aryl-substituted poly(arylenevinylenes), aromatic polymers which have unusual electrical properties owing to their conjugated bond system and have high thermal oxidative stability. The object of the invention is to use dehydrohalogenation to repair poly(arylenevinylenes) having modified, improved or new properties, such as, for example, absorption behaviour, solubility, ionisation potential, chemical reactivity or stability. The present process for the preparation of an aryl-substituted poly(arylenevinylene) by dehydrohalogenation using nitrogen bases is characterised in that geminal dihalides of structure 3 are polymerised and copolymerised, and substituted poly(arylenevinylenes) 4 and copolymers 5 having material properties influenced by R, Ar and Ar' are obtained, <IMAGE> in which X is chlorine or bromine, R is preferably H, alkyl, CN, COOR, phenyl, substituted phenyl, chlorophenyl, methoxyphenyl, dialkylaminophenyl or thienyl, Ar is a divalent aromatic radical which is preferably derived from benzene, biphenyl, naphthalene, anthracene or thiophene, and Ar' is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic radical, preferably phenyl, chlorophenyl, methoxyphenyl, methylphenyl, methoxycarbonylphenyl, pyridyl or thienyl, and where the specific combination of R = H, Ar = ...
