A process for preparing O-alkylated halopyridinate compounds, e.g., ethyl 2-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyloxy)acetate by reacting ethyl 2-chloroacetate and sodium 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinate in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst in the absence of an added organic solvent.
