PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of recognizing a character and a mark in information including mixedly graphs, characters and marks by providing a figure recognition part, etc., and considering the degree ratio of a graph including a degree value character when the character in the graph is recognized. CONSTITUTION:After an original 1 is stored in a buffer memory 3 through an original reader 2, a decision part 4 first stores only a character pattern in a document image memory 5, and a character recognition part 6 recognizes characters. If some part of each degree value in a histogram cannot be recognized, only graphic information is extracted out of an image stored in a memory 3, and stored in a graphic image memory 8. Then the figure recognition part 9 recognizes figures. A degree value that cannot be recognized through the calculation of the ratio of degrees in the graph is calculated, and a normal character corresponding to the value is read out of a character font ROM7 and displayed through a VRAM10. Thus the efficiency of recognizing characters and marks in the information including graphs, characters and marks can be enhanced.
