PURPOSE:To measure the amount of both organic and inorganic carbon, by arranging a first passage to send a sample containing a carbon compound through a deaerator for removing CO2 in the sample and a second passage to do so through no deaerator. CONSTITUTION:A sampling containing an organic carbon compound is supplied from a line 2 and a first reaction liquid (sulfuric acid and potassium persulfide) from a line 10 to be mixed by a line 6. The sample liquid is sent to an deaerator 23 through a first passage 21 to remove CO2 contained in the organic carbon compound. Then, the sample liquid is sent to a reactor 31 and the organic carbon is caused to react with the potassium persulfide to generate CO2, which is checked with a measuring device 41 to detect the amount of carbon. A sample liquid containing an inorganic compound is supplied to a line 6 from a line 3 and a second reaction liquid (sulfuric acid) thereto 6 from a line 11 and sent to the reactor 31 through a second passage 22 detouring the deaerator 23, where the inorganic carbon reacts with sulfuric acid to generate CO2. Then, the amount of inorganic carbon is detected. This enables measurement of the amount of both organic and inorganic carbon, thereby reducing equipment costs.
