PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive copying machine commonly used as a printer, by providing a panel having a thermal optical effect to change a thermal written part from transparency to opacity, and a thermal writer which writes an image on the panel, and performing scan with a light source from the underneath of the panel. CONSTITUTION:By moving an original platen 2, and scanning the panel 20 with light beams from the light source 21, only a part where the thermal write is performed by a laser oscillator 25 out of the smectic A phase liquid crystal layer of the panel 20 goes to a focal conic orientated state. The light beams projected from the light source 21 on the part are reflected irregularly, therefore, only the light beams projected on the part where no thermal write is applied is reflected, and project a phnotosensitive drum 12 via an optical system 3. As a result, an electrostatic latent image formed on the photosensitive drum 12 is the one on whose part equivalent to a printed part where the thermal write is performed electric charge is left. In such way, it is possible to attach a function also as the printer on the copying machine with simple constitution, and to manufacture the machine with low cost.
