In manufacture the hollow cylindrical blanks for members 10, 40 are first bored with holes 14a, 14b. 10a, 16b, 24a, 24b, 26a, 26b and 44a, 44b, 46a, 46b, 54a, 54b, 56a, 56b to form flexure portions 18, 20, 28, 30, 48, 50, 58, 60. The members 10, 40 are then assembled together with the flexure portions of one member lying across respective flexure portions of the other member, and welded together, e.g. by electron beam welding, or glued together. Aligned slots in the inner and outer members are cut by spark erosion using electrodes as shown in Fig. 11, to join pairs of bores and separate the three gimbal elements of the joint. The workpiece is secured and the tool 170 advanced to cut two halfslots, e.g. 14, 44 and 16, 46. The tool is with- drawn and indexed through 180 degrees about its axis of advance to invert it. The workpiece is indexed through 90 degrees. The tool is advanced to cut two more half-slots, e.g. 26, 56 and 24, 54. The procedure is repeated until all the slots have been completed. |
