A composite cathode material for a solid state electrochemical cell comprises an electrode material (for example an insertion electrode material such as V6O13), a polymer electrolyte material such as a poly (ethene oxide): lithium salt complex, and, optionally, an electronically conducting material. Either or both of the electrode material and the electronically conducting material, if present, carries a continuous, hydrophilic film of a film forming polymer thereon, which polymer is different from the polymer of the polymer electrolyte and which film has a defined boundary. Examples of such film forming polymers are polyelectrolytes such as acrylic polymeric quaternary ammonium compounds and low charge polysaccharides such as gellan gum. |
