Analgesic activity is exhibited by compounds having the formula <IMAGE> and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof wherein R1, R2 and R4 are each independently hydrogen, alkyl, carboxyalkyl, halosubstituted alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, mercaptoalkyl, alkylthioalkyl, (cycloalkyl)alkyl, (heteroaryl)alkyl, arylalkyl, carbamoylalkyl, guanidinylalkyl, or heteroaryl, and R3 is hydroxymethylene or carbonyl.
