PURPOSE:To obtain the small-sized and lightweight electric propulsion device by omitting or reducing a starting auxiliary power system to the min. by using the starting working fluid which easily generates electric discharge such as argon gas when the propulsion device is started. CONSTITUTION:The captioned device consists of an arc jet generator 4, pilot fluid feeding system 11 for supplying a starting working fluid (argon gas, etc.) which easily generates electric discharge, working fluid feeding system 5 for feeding the working fluid such as the propellant (hydrogen gas, etc.) which possesses the superior propulsion faculty, low voltage DC power source 6, and the selector valves 12 and 13 for interlocking operation. The pilot working fluid which easily generates electric discharge is supplied into the arc jet generator 4 by opening the starting selector valve 13 (closing the selector valve 12). When a low voltage is applied between the electrodes 1 and 2 from the low voltage DC power source 6, arc discharge is started, and as the temperature of the electrode rises, the electric discharge state is stabilized. The selector valves 12 and 13 are switched in this state, and the working fluid is supplied from the working fluid feeding system 5, and the stable arc discharge is maintained, and transfer to the stationary operation is performed.
