PURPOSE:To inspect the straightness of a nuclear fuel rod by placing the nuclear fuel rod on a surface plate and calculating on interval of both of them. CONSTITUTION:By operating a supply device 34, a nuclear fuel rod F is fed out to an inclined board surface 33. When the nuclear fuel rod F enters a measuring area A, a light projecting deice 51 is operated, a laser beam is projected toward a galvanometer 52, and also, the specular surface of the galvanometer 52 is brought to an oscillating motion. The laser beam is projected to the nuclear fuel rod F rolling down on the board surface 33. In this case, if the nuclear fuel rod F is bent, a gap S is generated between the rod and the board surface 33 if a straight plane. The laser beam which has passed through this gap S is photodetected by a photodetecting device 53, and the gap S is measured by a photodetecting quantity measuring instrument 54 and a gap calculating device 55. Subsequently, a straightness deciding device 56 decides whether the straightness of the nuclear fuel rod is an acceptance or a nonacceptance against the specifications, from said calculated gap S. Next, its result is sent to a controller 57.
