PURPOSE:To improve the activation efficiency and reduce the production cost of activated carbon, by attaching an oxidizing gas introduction pipe to a thermal activation-type rotary furnace for producing activated carbon by the oxidization of a carbonaceous material and supplying an oxidizing gas to the furnace in activation of the material. CONSTITUTION:A blower 9 is attached to the outer surface of a thermal activation-type rotary furnace 6 and an oxidizing gas introduction pipe 10 is extended from the blower 9 through the furnace wall and opened at the center axis of the furnace. A burner 2 of a combustion chamber 1 placed at the front end of the furnace is ignited, steam suppled through a pipe 3 is blasted toward the formed flame, and an activation gas containing CO2 and H2O is supplied to the furnace. At the same time, a carbonaceous material 5 is introduced from a hopper 4 into the furnace and subjected to the reactions of formula I and formula II to effect the oxidization and activation of the carbonaceous material 5. An oxidizing gas such as air is introduced into the furnace through the introduction pipe 10. The H2 and CO components generated by the activation reaction are oxidized with the introduced oxidizing gas according to the reactions of formula III and formula IV and are regenerated to H2O and CO2 as the activation gas components. Activated carbon can be produced in high efficiency by this process. |
