The active steering course indicator needle (80) includes a shaft, a socket part (84) and a paddle (86). The compass has a long pivoting pin (48') supported by an arm in a cardan basket, and extending radially inwards through a cardan ring (50). The needle socket is placed on the pivot pin (48) between a distance piece (88) and an end cover (90) so that the indicator needle may pivot freely around the symmetry axis of the pivoting pin when the vessel moves laterally or rolls, and generaly together with the rolling of the compass rose (68). The paddle counterbalances the indicator shaft around the symmetry axis to hold it extended upwards, and also damps rotary movement of the indicator needle. The compass unit (12) is fitted on e.g. a sailing boat with the active indicator needle (80) aligned with the longitudinal symmetry axis of the craft. When the craft heels to one side, and the surface on which the compass is fitted inclines, the cardan basket functions so that the compass unit is maintained horizontally. |
