PURPOSE:To reduce variation of heating temperature of a material to be sterilized, prevent deterioration of quality by overheating and uniformly and thermally sterilize the material to be sterilized in a short time, by containing the material to be sterilized in a container, etc., partially heating the resultant packaged material with microwaves at first and wholly heating with microwaves. CONSTITUTION:A material heatable with microwaves is contained in a container or bag to give a packaged material (A), which is fed to a conveyor 8, partially heated with microwaves in a heating chamber (1A) at first and then wholly heated with microwaves in a heating chamber (1B)). The microwaves are absorbed in the central part of the packaged material in the heating chamber (1A) and then wholly in the packaged material in a heating chamber (1B) to finally and uniformly subject the whole packaged material to thermal sterilization.
