1292174 Glazing AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 7 July 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 32872/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division B2] A method of forming a coating such as a glaze on a surface of an article, which comprises positioning precursors for the coating in contaet with the surface, subjecting the precursors to radiation from a carbon dioxide laser, the output of the laser and time of application of the beam being controlled so that the precursors fuse without any substantial heating of the article itself occurring. The laser radiation may be arranged to fall at any one time on only a portion of the surface. The article is pre-heated to a temperature substantially less than the fusion temperature of the precursors. The method is carried out in a gas-tight chamber formed by a hood 22 and base 20. The article 24 is placed on rotary table 26, the laser beams passing through two windows 28, 30. The chamber may be evacuated by means of line 30 so that the method is carried out in a vacuum, or filled with a suitable gas. In an example, ZrO 2 is coated on to an Al 2 O 3 substrate.
|
