PURPOSE:To set a tool reference plane with no error, by having deflection in each measuring direction of a probe and delat travel till an arithmetic processing unit recognizes a contact signal due to contact between the probe and a workpiece stored in a memory device as correction value at each control. CONSTITUTION:Travel of up to the specified position A of a table 11 of a probe TS is read out as the discrete value Nx of a travel counter C of a central arithmetic unit 40. Next, deflection x1 of the probe TS stored in a memory 41 and travel x2 due to an electrical response time lag inherent in a machine both are read out. And, the discrete value Nx of the counter C is compensated by an equation of Nx= x1+ x2, and Nx in the above equation is set down to the discrete value of the counter C. Next, correction travel value Nx is subtracted from relative travel value NR till a scheduled workpiece W and the probe TS are contact with each other, finding correction value NH, and addition or subtraction is carried out as much as this NR to or from the existing position of the workpiece, whereby rightful positioning for the workpiece W can be done.
