PURPOSE:To detect the size of an original, and to automatically and correctly this image information by a printer, by detecting a position in the main scanning direction of the original based on one side as a reference, by a scan of a line image sensor, in a device for outputting an image by a recorder such as a laser printer, etc. CONSTITUTION:One side of an original is fixed, and the size is recognized by knowing a position and length of an oblique line part 21a. At the time of detecting a size, a level of a black reference is raised so that a light quantity difference is taken by a part being near white, and the light quantity-up of the end part of the original is detected. For instance, in order to separate the end part and other white level, a data is binarized by some threshold value. As for length in the main scanning direction, an X count which can count the number of picture elements at every line is provided, and by making this counter enable only when an end part signal is H, the length is counted. Width of this end part signal H is 30-50 lines, therefore, in these lines, that of the longest count value is held and XCNT is obtained in the end.
