PURPOSE:To cut down the number of detectors and to reduce the cost of production, by providing one detector detecting a black ground part of a thermal transfer ribbon, a ribbon end judging means to judge the arrival of a transparent end part, a ribbon type judging means to judge whether the ribbon detected is a black ribbon or a color ribbon, and a heading judging means to judge a heading state. CONSTITUTION:A leader part 2 and an end part 3 of a black ribbon 1, which is a thermal transfer ribbon, are transparent, and a black part 4 is provided therebetween. The leader part 2 and the end part 3 of a color ribbon 5 are transparent, and a part between them is divided by color in the sequence of a yellow section 6, a magenta section 7 and a cyan section 8, and marker parts 9 and 10, which are black ground parts, are provided between the color sections 6, 7 and 8 and between the leader part 2 and the yellow part 6, respectively. Based on a detection signal from one detector 13, the transparent end part 3 of the thermal transfer ribbon is detected to judge the arrival of the end part 3 of the thermal transfer ribbon, and the length of the black ground part of the thermal transfer ribbon is detected to judge whether the ribbon detected is the black or the color. Besides, the width of the black ground of the marker part of the color ribbon is detected to judge that the color ribbon is in a heading state.
