PURPOSE:To improve the workability by providing a lock mechanism which locks an upper unit between the close state and the full open state. CONSTITUTION:A copying machine A is divided into an upper unit 1 and a lower unit 2 with a paper passing path R as the boundary, and a photosensitive drum 4 and an electrophotographic copying process 5 are arranged in the upper unit 1, and a paper supply part 3, a transfer charger 6, a fixing device 7, and a paper eject tray 8 are arranged in the lower unit 2. The upper unit 1 can be vertically opened and closed around a fulcrum part and is locked in three states, namely, the close state, the half open state, and the full open state by a cylindrical pushing-up mechanism, which incorporates a spring and has both ends connected to units 1 and 2, and a lock mechanism. Thus, a heavy member like the photosensitive drum is easily taken out at a stable attitude to improve the workability.
