EXAMPLE:A compound shown by formula II. USE:Useful as a constituent component for ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal composition. Constituting a display element or electro-optical element having high spontaneous polarization, capable of responding at high speed in a wide temperature range without narrowing temperature range of smectic C phase. PREPARATION:As shown in the reaction formula, a p-substituted benzoic acid shown by formula III is reacted with a chlorinating agent to give a reaction product shown by formula IV, which is reacted with a compound shown by formula V in the presence of a basic substance to give a compound shown by formula I.
