PURPOSE:n-Octanol is added to a specific complex at a specific molar ratio to enable high-yield and low-cost production of the titled compound which is suitable for use as an extractant for extractive separation of Ni and Co. CONSTITUTION:A complex of the formula: [<+>BuPCl3AlCl4<->] is combined with n-octanol at a molar ratio of 0.5-3 and the reaction is effected, preferably at 0-80 deg.C for 30min to give the objective compound. Preferably an alkali is added to the reaction mixture to effect selective recovery of the objective compound into the aqueous phase, resulting in high purity of over 95%.
