PURPOSE:To evaluate material permeating performance, by introducing a chemical emission method and an photoelectric method to measure the amount of material permeation of a thin film quickly with a high sensitivity. CONSTITUTION:A glass substrate 1 on which is ford a gelatin thin film 2 containing one chemical luminescence substance that would cause chemical emission when mixed is arranged on a rack 9 having an opening inside a black box 8. Then, a high polymer thin film 3 to be tested is formed on the gelatin thin film 2. A hydrogen peroxide solution 4 is held in a cell 5, containing a fixed area of the thin film 3 being tested. Light passing through an opening of a detecting opening plate 6 provided below the rack 9 is detected with a photo detector 7. A trace of hydrogen peroxide passing through the thin film 3 reacts with luminol within the gelatin thin film 2 to emit very weak light with the maximum near 460nm. This permits the estimation of a trace of permeating material by an output of the photo detector 7.
