The device stems from the principle of operation of the sundial. It includes a directional light source 10 mounted on a mobile support 7-8-9 propelled by a reduction motor 5 so as to describe a circle 12 coaxial with a straight element 4 mounted perpendicular to a plate 1 in the course of a specified time period, one hour for example. Thus, through its angular position on the plate, the shadow 11 cast by this element indicates the instant corresponding to the position of the lamp 10. This device can be designed as table, lamp, hanging, or wall-mounted, or, again, in the form of an outdoor monument. <IMAGE>
