PURPOSE:To obtain a fluorescent character display tube easy to manufacture and excellent in display quality by providing anode conductors connected by wiring conductors in zigzag on every other line to cover a phosphor layer, fixedly providing plane grids on a substrate for each picture element line, proving auxiliary grids among them, and providing cathodes on the plane grids. CONSTITUTION:An insulating substrate 1 is coated with an Al thin film, and multiple dot-shaped anode conductors 2 and wiring conductors 3 connected to them are formed in parallel in the line direction. Anode conductors 2 are arranged in zigzag on every other line to cover a phosphor layer 9, and a picture element is formed with a triangle made of three dots of R, G, B. Next, a black insulating layer 4 is formed on the whole substrate except the anode conductors 2. Plane grids 5 are formed on the substrate 1 in the line direction for each picture element line, and auxiliary grids 6 are arranged among them. The grids 5, 6 are formed by stacking an electrode supporter 7 made of an insulating layer 7a and an intermediate layer 7b and a conductive control electrode 8 on it. Next, filament-shaped cathodes are stretched and arranged on the grids 5. They are stored in an envelope, which is exhausted and sealed.
