PURPOSE:To certainly detect abnormality such as a joint, abrupt thickness variation, foreign matter or burr regardless of the inherent thickness of a strip like continuous body, by detecting the difference of a thickness between two points close to each other of the strip like continuous body. CONSTITUTION:The first and second fixed rollers 14a, 14b contacting with one surface of a strip like continuous body 10 being a body to be detected are fixed at a predetermined interval. Then, the first and second shaking rollers 12a, 12b are pivotally supported at the positions opposed to said rollers 14a, 14b so as to hold the continuous body 10 therebetween by the first and second L-shaped arms 16, 24 pivotally supported in a freely shakable manner by an appropriate member. At this time, when the rollers 12a, 12b are shaken by the thickness change of the continuous body 10, the arms 16, 24 are together shaken in the same direction and a coil spring 20 allows the arms 16, 24 to return to a predetermined position from the shaking position. The change in the respective intervals generated when the thickness change part of the continuous body 10 passes between the rollers 14a, 12a and between the rollers 14b, 12b is detected by the release of the contact of a contact piece 22 with a switch 28.
