PURPOSE:To improve the reaction rate and lower the catalyst deterioration rate in the hydrogenation of pitch, by distilling a hydrogenated tar oil or pitch and adding the distilled oil to coal tar pitch to cause hydrogenation. CONSTITUTION:In hydrogenating coal tar pitch in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, a distilled oil obtained by distilling a hydrogenated tar oil or pitch is added to coal tar pitch to cause hydrogenation. The coal tar pitch used herein should preferably be one having a softening point of 50-100 deg.C. If a quinoline-insoluble matter is present in hydrogenation, it would invite various unfavorable problems such as the choking of the catalyst layer, and its content should preferably be decreased to 0.2wt% or lower in advance. The hydrogenation catalyst should preferably be a catalyst supported on a refractory inorganic oxide carrier containing at least one member of oxides and sulfides of metal elements of Groups VI B and VIII of the periodic table.
