PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a raw material for resins, etc., in high purity, by oxidizing and coupling a 2,6-dialkylphenol to give a 3,3',5,5'-tetraalkyl-4,4'-biphenol and heating the biphenol in a specific mixed solvent. CONSTITUTION:A 2,6-dialkylphenol is oxidized and coupled to give a 3,3',5,5'- tetraalkyl-4,4'-biphenol, which is heated and reacted in a mixed solvent of a lower alcohol and an aromatic hydrocarbon preferably at 80-150 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere to give the aimed compound. The weight ratio of the aromatic hydrocarbon to the lower alcohol of the mixed solvent used is 0.1-10, preferably 1-5 and the amount of the solvent used is preferably 3-10pts.wt. based on 1pt.wt. 3,3',5,5'-tetraalkyl-4,4'-biphenol.
