PURPOSE:To form a supersaturated solid solution phase of fine transition metallic elements on the surface and to improve the quality of aluminum alloy stocks by extruding an ordinary aluminum alloy stock whose surface is covered by a rapidly solidified aluminum alloy stock. CONSTITUTION:A rapidly solidified aluminum alloy has excellent workability, wear resistance, and surface treatability owing to the fine crystalline structure and also shows excellent heat resistance and corrosion resistance depending on containing components; a large ingot of the alloy can not be formed because of its generative characteristics. As a compensation method against the disadvantage, an ordinary aluminum alloy stock is extruded to cover the surface of the stock with the rapidly solidified aluminum alloy and to form a supersaturated solid solution phase of fine transition metallic elements on the surface of the ordinary aluminum alloy stock and to make the aluminum alloy stock the high quality product having the above characteristics. Extrusion after covering the ordinary aluminum stock with a thin sheet of the rapidly solidified aluminum alloy is also useful.
