Before salt-rich coal having a chlorine content of at least 5% by weight, a total content of alkali metal chloride and alkali metal sulphate in the ash of the coal of at least 10% by weight, with grain sizes of the coal of less than 12 mm and the ash having a melting point of at most 800@C, is burned, the coal grains are at least partially enveloped with at least one oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or sulphate of calcium or magnesium. The enveloped coal is burned at a maximum temperature which is above the melting point of the ash of the untreated coal. The envelope ensures that the ash does not melt. The coal impregnated by enveloping can be burned in a fluidised bed, in a circulating fluidised bed or else in a kiln with overlying bed. Preferably, the coal pretreated in this way is burned together with inert material. |
